An unknown 1939 Ford convertible custom from The Jimmy Summers Photo Collection. Could this be another channeled Jimmy Summers build? The photo comes from the collection of Karen Smith, so the chances are big. Other modifications include a chopped top, removed running boards, shaved door handles, and a later-model front bumper. Photo from The Jimmy Summers Photo Collection.
An unknown 1939 Ford restyled in the late 1940s.
An unknown 1939 Ford Convertible custom that Jim Overby shot at the 1952 Bonneville Nationals. A chopped and padded top, flipper hubcaps, ripple bumpers, fog lights, and a single spotlight makes this custom stand out at the lakes. It was running 1952 Oklahoma license plates. Photo by Jim Overby, provided by Karl Knecht.
Arthur Lellis' 1939 Ford Convertible of Los Angeles, California. Restyled by Art at Art & Jerry Custom Shop, the build was completed in 1946.
Bill Collins' 1939 Ford Convertible of Dallas, Texas. Bill ran the ford in the mid-1950s. He lived in the Oak Cliff part of Dallas and was one of the early hot rodders there in the 1950s.
Bill Pearce's 1939 Ford Convertible of Hacienda Heights, California. Bill's Ford was restyled in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
Bob Calahan's 1939 Ford convertible sedan of Culver City, California. Bob was a member of the Culver City Screwdrivers.
C. E. Johnson's 1939 Ford, of California was restyled in the late 1940s.
Chuck Manning's 1939 Ford Coupe. Before building the Chuck Manning Special in 1951, Chuck also built and raced this customized coupe.
Clarence Patterson's 1939 Ford convertible of Glen Allen, Virginia. Built by Glen, the build was started in 1948 and completed in 1951.
Dick Bair's 1939 Ford Convertible Sedan as it looked in 1948. Dick was from Akron, Ohio.
G. L. Harlander's 1939 Ford V-8 convertible sedan of Oakland, California was restyled in the 1940s.
Harry O. Lutz' 1939 Ford Convertible as it looked in 1948. Harry was from Ferguson, Missouri.
Harry Keiichi Nishiyama's 1939 Ford convertible of Hilo, Hawaii. Harry's chopped and channeled Ford was built in 1949.
Jerry Moffatt's 1939 Ford Convertible of Los Angeles, California. Restyled by Jerry at Olive Hill Garage, the build was completed in 1946.
Kenny Controtto's 1939 Ford Convertible of South Gate, California was restyled in the 1940s.
Mel Falconer's 1939 Ford, of Sacramento, California was restyled by Harry Westergard and completed in 1945.
Tommy Sanders' 1939 Ford 4-door Phaeton - The Red Bird.
Dennis Murphy's 1939 Ford Convertible Sedan of Wyckoff, New Jersey. Murphy purchased the car in Ohio in 1960. He was 15 years old at the time, looking for his first car, and was excited when he saw a hot rod for sale by the side of the road. A deal was made, and his dad drove it the 400+ miles back to their home in New Jersey.
Dave Facey's 1939 Ford Coupe of Lakeland, Florida. For years, Dave used to pass by the radical custom on his way to work. It sat in a backyard, and in the early 1980s, he finally decided to stop and check it out. He bought it, and the seller told him that the sectioned and channeled car was built in the Ohio area. Dave eventually sold it to "Big George," who put in a big block Chevy running gear and additional customizations. He named it "The Silver Rose" and showed it for several years.
David Engemann's 1939 Ford Convertible of West Branch, Michigan. Known as "The Dream Catcher," the car was rescued from a junkyard in Escanaba, Michigan in 2023. The old custom traces its lineage to the influential designs of Harry Westergard, specifically recalling the iconic 1939 Ford Custom he built for Mel Falconer. Despite its illustrious connections, much of the car's past remains shrouded in mystery, from its original builder to its various transformations through the 1940s and 1950s.
