Staffan Runhag's 1937 Ford Tudor Sedan

After Staffan traded the car away, it eventually underwent a rebuild by Klas Wingren in Borås, receiving a 1951 Ford driveline, red plush interior, and black paint with Murano pearl flames by Ivve Hallberg. Staffan's old Ford as it appeared in 2021, when it was advertised for sale in a Swedish Facebook group for street/strip racing. By then, the car carried a more aggressive look with a skull and lightning bolt motif on the trunk lid and 'Hell A Go Go' lettering on the side.

Featured Story - Sweden

Staffan Runhag’s 1937 Ford Tudor Sedan Slantback was one of the first hot rods in Enköping, Sweden. Bought as a stocker in 1964, the Ford became Runhag’s first hot rod and an early symbol of the budding hot rod culture in his hometown.

Early History

Staffan Runhag of Enköping, Sweden, bought the 1937 Ford Tudor Slantback in 1964. At the time, the car was still stock. Inspired by the American hot rod movement, Staffan gave the Tudor a makeover, installing Radir wheels along with other minor modifications such as subtle pinstriping. Powered by a small Ford flathead V8, the car became Staffan’s first hot rod, and also one of the first hot rods to appear in Enköping.

Later History

After some time, Staffan traded the Ford to someone in Västerås. The car changed hands several times, gradually falling into disrepair. By the time Klas Wingren of Borås came across it, the Ford was in poor condition, with its fenders cut up and in need of replacement.

Klas began an extensive rebuild, returning the car to a street rod configuration reminiscent of its earlier life. A driveline from a 1951 Ford was installed, and the interior was redone in red plush by Borås Möbelklädsel. Ivve Hallberg handled the paintwork, finishing the car in gloss black with flames sprayed in Murano pearl. Completed in 1978, the car was featured in Colorod Magazine in an article written by Staffan himself.

Since then, the Tudor has had several owners. In 2021, it resurfaced for sale in a Swedish Facebook group dedicated to street/strip racing.

Significance

The 1937 Ford marked Staffan’s entry into the world of hot rods and customs, paving the way for his lifelong involvement in the Swedish rodding scene as an artist, writer, and one of the initiators behind the Swedish Street Rod Association (SSRA).
