Dusty Rhodes' 1947 Mercury
1947 Mercury Convertible owned by Dusty Rhodes of Spokane, Washington. Dusty drove his Merc all the way from Spokane to East Los Angeles to have Gil Ayala of Gil's Auto Body Works chop it. According to John Gunsaulis, a real Carson Top by Carson Top Shop was added on the way back home. Back home, Taylor Baker restyled the front end of the Merc at West End Auto Body. A grille was made out of pieces of late 1940s Lincoln grilles. The hood was louvered and the headlights were frenched before the car was sprayed organic purple. Slow Annie of Spokane finished the upholstery in maroon and cream. This iteration featured Pontiac taillights, a sunken license plate, and shaved door handles.[1]
Bonneville
Dusty's Merc ran a three-eights-by-three-eights full race flathead with Edelbrock heads and intake, and he raced it at the 1952 Bonneville Nationals. The rear end was a Columbia two-speed, and the transmission had Zephyr gears in it.[1]
Sold
Dusty told John Gunsaulis that he sold the Merc in the mid-1950s for $1,145.[1]
