Robert Zainer's 1949 Mercury

As it appeared in 1954.

1949 Mercury Convertible owned by Robert Zeiner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Robert’s Merc was featured as a “Reader’s Custom” in Rod & Custom June 1954. He had done all the work to the car by himself, except the top and upholstery. The car was nosed, decked and shaved for door handles and side trim. The doors opened through the use of an electric solenoid arrangement, and the truck was electrically lifted as well. The inner buttons were located in the arm rests, which made it convenient to open the doors. The hump on the top was eliminated by taking two inches out from the center bow, and the top still operated as it should. The upper part of the grille shell was welded to the hood, so that the hood would curve under, making the horizontal seam dissappear. The hood was peaked as well. The headlights were frenched by using 1952 Ford headlight rims, and a reworked Henry J grille was installed. When all the bodywork was done, Robert sprayed eight coats of Royal Marine lacquer over the car. By June 1954, the engine was stock.
