Built in an era of wild show cars and creativity, Cool wanted to look back to the roots of hot rodding when he set out to build his 32. A decision that helped him take home the 1978 America's Most Beautiful Roadster Award. It landed the cover of Hot Rod July 1978 and has since then been voted as one of the "Top 20 Trend Setting Rods of All Time," one of "The 75 Most Significant '32 Ford Hot Rods," and one of the "100 Most Influential Hot Rods of All Time." A heavy hitter of a hot rod, in other words. Quint and Shirley Meland bought the car in 1998. They have taken good care of the iconic hot rod, and Quint has now decided to let it go. This is a true survivor. It still looks as good as it did back in 1978. It has never been restored, and it still features the paint job that Cool laid in 1977. Von Dutch did the striping and Don Edmunds, longtime sprint car builder fashioned a pair of aluminum bucket seats and the car was turned over to Whitey in Seal Beach to trim the interior. 03.03.1960 - Ed Roth's Outlaw. Mr. Roth advertised his Outlaw for sale in Hot Rod Magazine March 1960. The price was not listed, but Bill Whetstone told Kustomrama that he went from Detroit, Michigan to California late in 1959 to have his 1960 Ford Starliner upholstered. After having it upholstered in Tijuana, he went over to Roth's place. Roth, who had just finished up the Outlaw, came out and looked at Bill's Starliner. "He was asking 2500 dollars for the Outlaw at that time, so he offered to make me a trade. He would trade the Outlaw even for my Ford, which would have been a great deal if I had a tow car and a trailer, but I didn't." After checking out the radical show rod, Bill told Roth that he couldn't afford a tow car, "so I never did make the trade." Thank god for that, as Bill returned to Michigan where he commissioned the Alexander Brothers into turning his Starliner into the Adonis.
