The Compton Drive-In at 2111 E. Rosecrans Blvd. in Compton, California, was another favorite backdrop for George Barris. Built in 1949, its dramatic architecture and bold detailing made it a perfect setting to showcase custom cars. Many iconic photos were shot here before the building was eventually demolished to make room for a shopping mall.
Lynwood City Hall in Lynwood, California was one of George Barris’ favorite photo locations. With its clean brick façade and minimal visual distractions, the building provided a simple yet effective backdrop that accentuated the lines of the cars, making them the true focal point of the photos.
The dramatic overpasses of the Harbor (110) and Hollywood (101) Freeways in Los Angeles provided George Barris with another striking backdrop. Here, the sweeping concrete structures framed custom cars with a sense of modernity and scale. On this spot, Barris photographed Fred Rowe's 1951 Mercury and Robert La Briola's 1949 Oldsmobile convertible the same day, creating some of the most memorable freeway-era custom car images.

Throughout the golden era of hot rodding and customizing, builders and photographers sought out distinctive backdrops to showcase their latest creations. These locations were carefully chosen for their clean lines, minimal distractions, or iconic settings that helped accentuate the cars. Over time, certain spots became favorites, instantly recognizable in countless magazine features and promotional photos. This page is a collection of those famous photo locations that helped define the look and feel of hot rod and custom car history.
