Universal brake boosters and master cylinders for hot rods, modified and customized cars
Having a fun and fast car can be great, but being able to stop is even better and also crucial. When your foot hits the brake pedal, it activates the brake fluid in the master cylinder who then pushes the brake fluid out to all the wheel cylinders where they engage the brake shoes or discs thus makes the car come to a safe stop.
It is an easy system but still has a lot of different and very important components, the master cylinder and brake booster being crucial ones and what we will highlight in this article.
Please note. The components are not all the same, and there is a wide range of products available. What you have to consider is what size you need for your car, where it mounts, body, or frame.
Here’s a good guide to selecting the right booster.

Are the brake booster and master cylinder the same?
No, they are not the same, but they do work very well together.
Do I really need a brake booster?
You can have a great brake system and drive the car without a brake booster, but if you want to make it easier to stop the car, you should use a booster as well. A good sign that your brake booster is bad, is when the brake pedal is harder to depress.
What size booster should I get, the bigger the better?
The boosters are powered by a vacuum, and while you can fit a smaller, let’s say 7” booster underneath the car if there’s limited space it’ll work. But generally speaking the bigger booster the better brake assist you will get.
Do I need a master cylinder?
Yes, you can not stop a car without a master cylinder. A sign of a bad master cylinder is when the pedal feels spongy and keeps sinking to the floor. At this point, you need to replace it immediately.
What are the benefits of an electric booster?
Sometimes your car may just not generate the proper amount of vacuum required. Then, this electrical unit will be a perfect solution. Here is one we highly recommend.
