Split Bumpers

"Al Banome, of Richmond Hill, owned many hot cars during the late '50s and '60s. This teal blue '55 was parked in front of my parents' house when I shot the only photo I have of it in August 1964. The body was extensively modified but still being worked on at this time. Note the dechroming, extended rear fenders with new tail lights, split rear bumper, and radiused rear wheel openings. Split Bumpers are a distinctive styling feature where the front or rear bumper is divided into two separate sections, usually leaving a gap at the center of the vehicle. Most famously seen on early second-generation Chevrolet Camaros (1970–1973 Rally Sport models), split bumpers give a more aggressive and sporty appearance compared to full-width designs. In the custom and hot rod world, builders sometimes adapted or created split bumpers to highlight grille openings, expose custom bodywork, or add a racy, lightweight look. Whether factory or handmade, split bumpers are a small detail that can make a big visual impact.
