Sidewinders member Phil Weiand of Weiand Power & Racing was born in Los Angeles in 1913. Both his parents were working as professional tailors in the manufacture of men's suits. Phil attended John Marshall High School in Pasadena, it was at this time his interests in hot-rods began to increase. When he was 14 he gave up the dream of becoming a musician and traded away his mandolin for a 1922 Ford Model T Touring. The Touring body was traded away in favor of a sportier looking 1924 Ford bucket, that served him well throughout his days at John Marshall. In shop class, Phil fabricated a custom exhaust header and straight pipe combination, as well as a downdraft carburetor and intake manifold. However, serious and engine modifications had to wait until he finished school, and by 1933 his roadster was ready for Muroc.
