Larry Hughes' 1926 Ford
1926 Ford Model T pickup truck owned by Larry Hughes of Boulder, Colorado. The car is also known as the "Bomber." In 1963, when Larry's Bomber was featured in Popular Customs Winter 1963, it ran two wild fins on each side of the truck bed that were fit with 1960 DeSoto taillights. Power came from a 327-cubic-inch 1959 Pontiac engine that was hopped up with an Offenhauser intake manifold that carried three Carter carburetors. According to the story in Popular Customs Winter 1963, it was original owner Bob Campbell of Lincoln, Nebraska, that had made the engine installation. The front end of the car carried out the fin design further. A cut down and shaved 1932 Ford grille was molded onto a finned fiberglass arrangement that housed canted quad headlights. The boxed frame was handmade, and the steering gear came from a Ford. Inside, Larry had fit the Bomber with a twilight mist and white diamond-tufted Naugahyde interrior, and a furry floor mat. By 1963, Larry's roadster pick up had taken four first places, a Best in Show and two People's Choice trophies. The value was conservatively estimated at $3500.
