Fred Lobello is a dry lakes and Bonneville salt flats racing pioneer. In July of 1941, at age 19, Fred purchased a stock 1932 Ford Roadster with a 4-cylinder engine. It didn't take long before the fenders were off, and the body was chopped and channeled. With a down-draft manifold and a Winfield cam, Fred ran 96 MPH with the roadster.[1]

Fred raced the first year at Bonneville in 1949, and has raced there almost every year since. At age 89 Fred still has the need for speed, and Jacob Bagnell, Mike Bloom and Randy Chenowth have helped Fred restore his old belly tank streamliner from the 1990s, called The Flight of the Phoenix, that he raced at the 2011 Bonneville Speedweek.[2]

Monday, Fenbruary 23, 2015 Fred passed away.
