Dry Lakes Racing
Dry Lakes Racing is one of the earliest forms of organized hot rodding, born in the wide, flat expanses of California’s Mojave Desert. In the 1930s, young enthusiasts began taking their stripped-down, hopped-up cars to places like Muroc, Rosamond, and El Mirage to test top speed over marked courses. The sport quickly gained popularity, and by 1937, clubs formed the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) to bring structure and safety to these events. Dry lakes racing emphasized speed, simplicity, and ingenuity, giving rise to the classic hot rod and many of the early pioneers who shaped the culture.
