1954 Oldsmobile F-88
1954 Oldsmobile Concept Car. The F-88, built on the chassis of a Chevrolet Corvette, was an attempt to create a similar high-performance fiberglass-body roadster, but with Oldsmobile-type styling such as bullet headlights and an elliptical grille mouth. It was powered by a suped-up V-8 from the Oldsmobile Super 88. Though never put into production, the F-88 made a striking impression on those who glimpsed it. A GM official who drove the concept vehicle from Detroit to New York for a public appearance, for example, was stopped along the way by a police officer, even though he wasn’t speeding. “The cop just wanted to see the car,” he later recalled.
