Gary New's 1949 Chevrolet
1949 Chevrolet Coupe restyled by Walkers Body Shop for Bakersfield Road Barons member Gary New of Bakersfield, California. The front was modified to accept a 1956 Chevrolet grille with a 1952 Chevrolet grille bar at the top and 1955 Chevrolet headlights. The hood was nosed and received 6 rows of louvers. The trim was shaved from the deck lid and doors; the rear fenders were extended and received fins housing frenched 1956 Plymouth lenses. Gary installed a chromed 1956 Pontiac engine under the hood. The engine was hooked to a 4.11:1 rear end for drags. The interior was redone in black and white Naugahyde by France's Top Shop in a pleated bucket seat motif. A Bat insignia in the rear seat matched the cars name "Batmobile". Ed Roth, "The Crazy Painter" livened the black car up with pearl green scallops. Ed also painted "Batmobile" on the rear fenders. Gary lowered the car with a slight rake toward the front and installed Dodge Lancer Hubcaps. From the photos of the car in Trend Book 205 Restyle Your Car from 1961, you can see that the dashboard also received some pinstriping.
